Back Pain
A pain in the back is a condition of being human, it is almost universal for us at some time in our lives to have back pain. The idea of carrying the world on your back can explain some back pain because sometimes we feel as if we are carrying the world on our back. Mechanical ideas about back pain are more easily understood. Joints becoming stuck that need unsticking is the very basic understanding of mechanical back problems but is not a good explanation. At Life Right rather than teach a way of back’s going wrong we listen to you and find out the probable root of your back pain.
Old ideas of back pain would involve the intevertebral discs but thanks to the plethora of MRI centres in Italy we have come to realise that discs will wax and wane in size and even extrude material in a normal process of being a disc. When we are tense we can hold our tension and prevent the natural lengthening of our spine which can lead to always compressed and thus reduced height or dehydrated discs. A sign of wear and tear. Degeneration is wear and tear and all it means is you are not using your body in an efficient way. Abnormal loading of joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons lead to degeneration. We look forward to a time when degeneration is realised to be associated with inefficient use over time and not with age (Chronology).
Normally, back pain should clear up within 3-14 days. Each pain episode is a state of learning because pain is the central nervous systems most potent tool in learning. Pain is a part of life and is normal in the right way. When we do not heed or understand our pain we can become chronic. If you decide to leave getting an appointment because your pain has cleared then you’ll almost certainly have another bout of pain. (Ask us how you can predict future back pain episodes) We’ll be able to work with you in understanding your back pain and translating what your body is doing or not doing to you so that you can understand and feel what your pain is telling you. If you haven’t booked in to see us already or you’ve had no improvement for 14 days, refer yourself to our health & wellbeing centre to receive appropriate treatment before you develop a compensation pattern of movement into a ‘new normal’.
When back pain is left to ‘get better on it’s own’, after 4-6 weeks symptoms have subsided and you will have a ‘new normal’ for your back. Invariably this compensation is what causes chronic recurrent back pains. Pain is the best sensation to enable people to learn as pain says ‘don’t do that’. To the body, pain says ‘don’t move that’, leading to your body having areas of immobility that can perpetuate symptoms in your first episode which can lead onto further episodes of pain (either similar or different).
Back pain has been attempted to be classified many times by many different groups of researchers but as yet agreement between disciplines and professions is not 100% congruent. Meaning that communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals of different disciplines is fraught with mis-understanding and terminology. Our view point is that of a systems led intergrative individual approach.
